Traumatic Vascular Lesions : Figure 2

19 year old figure skater fell during skating practice which resulted in a neck injury requiring surgery. The radiograph on the far left shows the orthopedic fixation that was required to stabilize her cervical spinal fracture-dislocation. Unfortunately, the orthopedic procedure was complicated by unexpected bleeding following placement of pedicle fixation screws. Initial arteriography (middle image) demonstrates a pseudoaneurysm, or false aneurysm (arrow), of the right vertebral artery near the site of the original injury. Endovascular occlusion of the pseudoaneurysm (far right image, black arrow) resulted in a complete cure, and the patient remains neurologically normal and has resumed her skating career.
