Extracranial (Brachiocephalic) Atherosclerosis : Figure 1

82 year old right-handed woman with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease and progressive right internal carotid artery stenosis despite aggressive medical therapy with anti-platelet and statin medications. A, Right common carotid arteriography demonstrates severe (greater than 90%) stenosis of the proximal right internal carotid artery (arrow). B, Fluoro-radiograph demonstrates placement of a vascular filtration device across the site of stenosis prior to stent-angioplasty (arrow). C and D, Fluororadiograph and right common carotid arteriogram demonstrate placement of the endovascular stent with restoration of normal blood flow in the right carotid artery (arrows). The patient tolerated the procedure very well and was discharged the following morning.
