Extracranial (Head and Neck) and Paraspinal Vascular Malformations : Figure 1

37 year old man developed a loose tooth on the right side of his jaw and severe bleeding after eating a meal. CT scan (upper left image) shows an abnormal soft tissue mass in the mandible which has eroded the overlying bony cortex (black arrow). Fluororadiograph (upper right image) shows that the soft tissue mass in the mandible is an extracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

The patient underwent pre-operative transarterial embolization of the AVM to reduce bleeding at the time of surgery. The arteriographic image prior to embolization(lower left image) shows rapid arteriovenous shunting arising from distal branches of the right facial artery. Following embolization, the AVM is completely occluded, thus facilitating safe and complete surgical resection.
